First smiles, first steps, first words – we become delightfully obsessive about capturing all of our first baby’s milestones. But it shouldn’t stop there! With crazy schedules and long check lists, capturing important moments seems to be the first thing we stop doing.  Whether you’re a parent or not, we must slow down every now and then and practice savoring important moments. From graduations, weddings, grandbabies, to new or first jobs, these milestones should be preserved and celebrated as well!

This week, I want to share with you some of my favorite milestones that I have been able to capture on camera. You can use these as your inspiration for your shots this week. I am giving you complete creative freedom for this challenge. While you may not be celebrating a traditional milestone, like a first step or graduation, an every day milestone is just as important because of the importance to you. And for that reason alone, it should be celebrated!

8 Milestone Moments

Week 21: May 18-24, 2013

8 milestone moments

1. The first picture – I have to give my husband all the credit for this photo. Right before my c-section with my second son, I set all of the settings on the camera and handed it over to him. I knew he would get the shot. And he did!

2. The first steps - You expected a photo of my little walking didn’t you? True, most parents photograph the first steps but I grabbed the camera when my little one first tried to master the steps! It didn’t take him long to figure that one out.

3. The first birthday – One of my favorite types of sessions are smash cakes! They are so much fun {and messy}! I love doing these sessions because they are very simplistic. A baby and a cake. You never know what their reaction is going to be, 9 times out of 10, it’s priceless!

4. The first day of school – I started this tradition this past fall when Ethan started Pre-K. I can’t wait to look back on the years and see how much he has grown. This will definitely be part of the collage poster and photo book I make for him when it comes time for graduation {but let’s not get ahead of ourselves!}.

5. The everyday milestones – It doesn’t have to be a special occasion for it to be a milestone. My youngest has a slight speech delay and we celebrate every new word he says! It involves a lot of clapping and dancing. Other everyday milestones we celebrate? Writing our name for the first time, reading a book, or riding a “big boy” bike!

6. Graduation – Senior pictures have become another of my current favorite sessions. Mom usually stands to the side and tries not to get teary eyed. These are a great time to show off the subjects interests and personality. It’s also time to have a little fun!

7. Their Wedding Day – Weddings are a day filled with milestones: the first time the bride and groom see each other, the first kiss, their first dance. The list goes on and on. There are moments definitely not to be missed all through out the day.

8. The date – Don’t forget to capture the date! This is a window for creativity. Newspapers and clocks are a fun and tactile way to capture the date for a milestone.

Your challenge this week is to capture these milestone moments, whatever they may be. Make sure you share your photos on Facebook.
